Metformin tablets are an oral medication used to help manage type 2 diabetes.
They work by lowering blood sugar levels through three main actions: reducing glucose production in the liver, improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin, and helping muscles absorb glucose more effectively. Metformin is often the first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes and can be used alone or alongside other medications or insulin.
It does not cause weight gain and carries a low risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) when used alone. By helping control blood glucose, metformin reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications and supports long-term health.
Metformin is an oral medication that is taken to help control blood sugar levels. It’s commonly prescribed to those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, as it works by reducing glucose production in the liver and improving the bodies sensitivity to insulin.
Metformin has been used as a medication since the 1950’s and has become one of the most commonly prescribed medications for managing diabetes and other conditions like PCOS and prediabetes.

Metformin is usually taken with or immediately after a meal to help reduce side effects such as nausea, diarrhoea and stomach discomfort. The dose depends on your blood glucose levels, the formulation prescribed and your individual needs.
You must swallow tablets as directed and follow your prescription label – do not change your dose without speaking to your prescriber.
Metformin starts working after you begin taking it, but it may take several days to notice an improvement in blood glucose levels. The full benefit can take several weeks, depending on your dose and individual response. Your healthcare professional may gradually increase your dose to improve blood sugar control while limiting side effects.
You must continue taking metformin as prescribed, even if you feel well, and attend recommended blood glucose checks to monitor how effectively your treatment is working.
If you miss a dose of metformin, take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed tablet, as this may increase the risk of side effects. If you frequently forget doses, consider using a medication reminder or taking your medicine alongside a regular meal, as instructed.
If you are unsure what to do, check the patient information leaflet or ask your pharmacist for advice.
Metformin is the generic name of the medicine used to help manage type 2 diabetes, while Glucophage is a brand name for a medicine containing metformin. Both help lower blood glucose by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and improving the body’s response to insulin.
