Vaginal Dryness is when the vaginal tissues do not produce enough natural lubrication, leading to discomfort, irritation, or pain during daily activities or sex. It is most common after menopause but can affect women at any age. Factors such as hormonal changes, stress, and certain medications can all play a role.
The most common cause of vaginal dryness is a drop in oestrogen levels, which often happens during and after menopause. The other causes include breastfeeding, some medications, and certain health conditions. Even stress or a lack of arousal can contribute to reduced lubrication.
The typical symptoms include itching, burning, soreness, and discomfort during sexual activity. Some women also notice a thin or fragile feeling in the vaginal tissue. In more severe cases, vaginal dryness can cause minor bleeding after sex or recurrent urinary tract infections.
Vaginal atrophy, also called genitourinary syndrome of menopause, can feel like persistent dryness, tightness, or burning in the vaginal area. Sex may become uncomfortable or painful, and some women report more frequent urinary issues. Over time, untreated atrophy can make symptoms worse and more noticeable.
There are mild cases of vaginal dryness that may improve with lifestyle changes such as reducing stress, staying hydrated, or using over the counter lubricants. However, if dryness is due to hormonal changes such as menopause, it is less likely to resolve without treatment. In these cases, medical treatments like vaginal oestrogen can be very effective.
The majority of vaginal oestrogen treatments are considered safe for long-term use at low doses, as they work locally rather than affecting the whole body. Side effects are generally mild and may include slight irritation or discharge when starting treatment. It is always best to discuss your health history with a doctor before beginning therapy.
Many women notice improvement in symptoms within a few weeks of starting treatment. For some, it may take up to three months to feel the full benefit. It is important to use this consistently to maintain comfort and hydration of the vaginal tissues.
Vaginal dryness treatments are typically suitable for most women experiencing menopause-related symptoms. However, women with a history of certain cancers, blood clots, or liver problems may need alternative options. A doctor can help determine the safest and most effective treatment for your situation.
If left untreated, vaginal dryness can lead to worsening discomfort, painful sex, and an increased risk of urinary tract infections. Over time, the vaginal tissues can become thinner and more fragile. Addressing these symptoms early can help prevent these complications and improve quality of life.
It is not recommended to use regular body lotions on the vaginal area, as they may cause irritation or disrupt the natural balance. Specifically formulated vaginal moisturisers or lubricants are much safer and more effective. Medical treatmetns such as vaginal oestrogen are designed to restore comfort without causing harm.
Yes – vaginal dryness can impact intimacy by making sexual activity uncomfortable or even painful. This may lead to stress, anxiety, or a reduced desire for sex. Effective treatments can not only improve physical comfort but also help restore confidence and closeness in relationships.
You should see a doctor if vaginal dryness is persistent, severe, or interfering with your quality of life. It is especially important to seek advice if you also experience pain, bleeding, or recurrent urinary infections. A doctor or pharmacist can recommend suitable treatments and rule out other possible causes.
