Have a question ? we're here to help
Ovestin Cream belongs to a group of medicines called Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It is the branded version of the generic medication called estriol.
It is used to relieve menopausal symptoms in the vagina such as dryness or irritation. This is medically known as ‘vaginal atrophy’. This is caused by a drop in the levels of oestrogen in your body, which happens naturally after the menopause.
If you decide to buy estriol Ovestin 1mg Cream online from e-Surgery, we require you to fill out a quick two-minute health questionnaire to ensure that the medication is right for you.
Ovestin Cream works by replacing the oestrogen which is normally produced in the ovaries of women. It is inserted into your vagina, so the hormone is released where it is needed. This relieves the symptoms of vaginal atrophy.
Once you have started using estriol Ovestin Cream, you should have regular check-ups with your doctor to discuss whether it is right to continue with the treatment.
Ovestin Cream can cause side effects which are mentioned in the patient information leaflet, although not everybody gets them.
The following diseases are reported more often in women using HRT which circulate in the blood compared to women not using HRT. However, these risks apply less to vaginally administered treatments, such as Ovestin Cream:
ovarian cancer
blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs
stroke
probable memory loss (if started over the age of 65)
You should see your doctor straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects, as the use of Ovestin Cream may have to be stopped:
your blood pressure rises
your skin or the whites of your eyes go yellow
you suddenly have migraine-type headaches
you have signs of a blood clot
you get signs of an allergic reaction (swollen face, tongue and/or throat and/or difficulty swallowing or hives, together with difficulty breathing)
Other side effects you may experience with Ovestin Cream include:
irritation or itching of the skin in or around your vagina when you start to use this medicine
increased vaginal discharge, bleeding or spotting
gall bladder problems
skin problems such as a rash or allergy to the sun
breasts become swollen, tender or painful
headaches
feeling sick or being sick
flu-like symptoms
If you have any of these side effects tell your doctor as they may decide to stop your treatment for a while.
Ovestin 1mg Cream should always be used exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are unsure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
When using Ovestin Cream for vaginal problems, the usual dose is 1 application a day for the first 2 to 3 weeks (maximum of 4 weeks). Afterwards, the dose should then be changed to 1 application twice a week. Your doctor will prescribe the lowest dose that relieves your symptoms but may stop you from time to time to check if you still need treatment.
A good time to apply Ovestin Cream is before going to bed. This can be done by following these instructions:
Remove the cap from the tube and turn the cap upside down. Use the sharp point to open the tube.
Screw the end of the applicator onto the tube
Squeeze the tube to fill the applicator with the cream up to the red ring mark
Unscrew the applicator from the tube and put the cap back on the tube
Apply the cream by lying down, putting the end of the applicator deep into your vagina and slowly push the plunger in
If you forget to use Ovestin Cream, apply the missed dose when you remember. However, if you are more than 12 hours late, just skip the missed dose. If you are unsure, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
There is no need to worry if you, or someone, has swallowed some cream by accident, or too much estriol Ovestin cream is applied at any time. However, you should talk to your doctor.
The person who accidentally swallowed some cream or apply to much may feel sick or be sick – and women may have some vaginal bleeding after a few days.
Do not use Ovestin Cream is any of the following applies to you:
if you have or have ever had breast cancer
if you have cancer which is sensitive to oestrogens

if you have excessive thickening of the womb lining
if you have or have ever had a blood clot in a vein
