Test Kits

Sexual health is a deeply personal journey that requires courage, information, and proactive care. At e-Surgery, we understand that discussing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can feel uncomfortable, but our mission is to provide compassionate, confidential, and clear guidance to support your health and well-being. Our comprehensive test kit is designed to empower you with knowledge, offering a discreet and reliable way to take control of your sexual health.

What Are Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea?

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are two of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide. Despite their common occurrence, these infections often go unnoticed due to their ability to develop without obvious symptoms, making regular testing a crucial aspect of sexual health management.

Chlamydia (chlamydia trachomatis) is a silent infection that can quietly impact reproductive health. It typically spreads through vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact with an infected partner. Dealing with chlamydia is particularly challenging as its ability to exist without producing noticeable symptoms allows it to progress undetected for extended periods.

Gonorrhoea (neisseria gonorrhoeae) shares similar transmission methods and characteristics. Similar to chlamydia, it can infect the reproductive tract, and in some cases, the mouth, throat, eyes, and rectum. The infection can develop in both men and women, presenting unique health challenges that underscore the importance of regular testing and early detection.

What You Need To Know About STI Testing

Our home test kit represents a critical tool in sexual health management, offering a confidential and convenient method for screening these common infections. The test kit is designed to detect the presence of chlamydia and gonorrhoea bacteria through a carefully collected sample.

However, home testing cannot detect infections in all potential sites, and results are specific to the moment of testing. The accuracy depends on several factors, including:

  • proper sample collection technique
  • timing of the test relative to potential exposure
  • individual biological variations

Interpreting the test results requires a holistic approach. A negative result does not guarantee permanent protection for STIs, just as a positive result is not a definitive judgement of one’s sexual history or character. The result is a snapshot of your current health status, providing an opportunity for informed decision making and proactive care.

Understanding Your Test Results

Receiving test results can be an anxious moment but understanding what they mean and the next steps available to you is crucial for maintaining your sexual health.

We refer to the bacteria name in the results: C. trachomatis (this refers to chlamydia) and N. gonorrhoeae (this refers to gonorrhoea).

Whether your results are positive or negative, we’re here to provide clear guidance, support, and practical next steps to help you make informed decisions.

Positive Chlamydia Result

Receiving a positive chlamydia (chlamydia trachomatis) result can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to approach this diagnosis with calm and understanding. Chlamydia is a common bacterial infection that many people encounter, and it’s entirely treatable with the right medical care.

The importance of addressing a chlamydia infection cannot be overstated. If left untreated, the infection can lead to more serious health complications. For women, there’s a risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease, which can impact fertility and increase the likelihood of pregnancy-related challenges. Both men and women may experience long-term health consequences if the infection is not promptly treated.

Medical treatment for chlamydia is straightforward and highly effective. Typically, a short course of antibiotics is prescribed, which can quickly and efficiently address the infection. While e-Surgery offers chlamydia treatment options, we also recognise that patients have multiple avenues for care. You can seek treatment through our pharmacy, local sexual health clinics, or your primary healthcare provider.

The path forward involves several crucial steps:

  • Complete the entire course of prescribed antibiotics are directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Inform your recent sexual partners about potential exposure, allowing them to get tested and treated if necessary.
  • During treatment, abstain from sexual activity to prevent further transmission.
  • Consider scheduling a comprehensive follow-up screening to ensure complete resolution of the infection.

Negative Chlamydia Result

A negative chlamydia test result provides relief, but it’s not a permanent guarantee of sexual health. This result indicates that no chlamydia bacteria were detected in your sample at the time of testing. However, it’s crucial to understand the limitations of home testing kits. These tests are specific to the moment of collection and may not detect very recent infections or those in areas not covered by the test.

A negative result is an opportunity to reinforce positive health practices. This includes:

  • continuing to practice safe sex practices including consistent use of protection.
  • having open communication with sexual partners.
  • consider regular check-ups and testing.

Positive Gonorrhoea Result

A positive gonorrhoea (neisseria gonorrhoeae) result requires immediate and thoughtful action. This bacterial infection, while serious, is treatable with appropriate medical intervention. Our primary concern is your health and well-being, and we approach this diagnosis with discretion and support.

Untreated gonorrhoea can lead to significant health complications. It can impact fertility for both men and women, increase susceptibility to other sexually transmitted infections, and potentially cause more widespread health issues. There are also risks associated with pregnancy and the potential to unknowingly transmit the infection to sexual partners.

The treatment plan for gonorrhoea typically involves a targeted antibiotic approach – most commonly a single antibiotic injection. This can be obtained from sexual health or GUM clinics which can be found on the NHS website.

Upon receiving a positive result, immediate action is recommended:

  • Seek medical treatment promptly to begin the healing process.
  • Inform recent sexual partners about potential exposure, allowing them to get tested and treated if necessary.
  • Abstain from sexual activity to prevent transmission.
  • A comprehensive STI screening is also advisable to check for any additional infections.

Negative Gonorrhoea Result

A negative gonorrhoea test result offers reassurance but should not be interpreted as a permanent declaration of sexual health. The test reflects the absence of detectable gonorrhoea bacteria at the specific moment of testing. However, home test kits, while valuable, have limitations in detection and cannot guarantee future sexual health.

This result is an opportunity to reinforce positive sexual health practices, including:

  • continuing to prioritise safe sexual behaviours, including consistent use of protection.
  • open and honest communication with sexual partners.
  • regular testing and scheduling periodic screenings.
