What are Amlodipine tablets?

These tablets contain the active substance Amlodipine and are a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker.

You can buy these tablets online, or from your local pharmacy, to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and can also be used to treat a certain type of chest pain called angina. These tablets should not be used to treat attacks of chest pain when they occur.

At e-Surgery, we can only prescribe Amlodipine tablets for high blood pressure. We will require you to fill out a quick 2-minute health questionnaire to ensure you are receiving the correct medication before you buy these tablets online.

We advise that you consult with either your prescriber or GP before you use or buy Amlodipine.

If you buy Amlodipine, how will it work?

When you buy these tablets and commence treatment they work by relaxing blood vessels, so that blood passes through them more easily. In patients with angina, these tablets work by improving blood supply to the heart muscle which then receives more oxygen and as a result chest pain is prevented.

We advise that you consult with either your prescriber or GP before you use these tablets.

If you buy Amlodipine, how do you take them?

Whenever you buy these tablets online, or from your local pharmacy, swallow the medication whole with a drink of water, before or after food. It is usually taken once daily, taken at the same time each day. Do not take these tablets with grapefruit juice, as this can increase the chance of side effects.

This medication is generally prescribed in 5mg tablets, but your doctor may adjust your dosage to as high as 10mg tablets. Taking too many of these tablets can cause you to feel dizzy, lightheaded, weak or faint. Your skin may feel cool or clammy. Seek immediate medical attention if you take too many of these tablets.

Always take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.

We advise that you consult with either your prescriber or GP before you use Amlodipine.

Are there any reasons why you should not take Amlodipine tablets?

You should not take these tablets if:

  • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to amlodipine tablets or any of the other ingredients (microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, colloidal anhydrous silica, Magnesium stearate) or to any other calcium antagonists. Amlodipine tablet allergy may cause itching, reddening of the skin or difficulty breathing.
  • You have severe low blood pressure (hypotension).
  • You have narrowing of the aortic heart valve (aortic stenosis) or cardiogenic shock (a condition where your heart is unable to supply enough blood to the body).
  • You suffer from heart failure after a heart attack.

You should consult your pharmacist or prescriber before taking these Tablets if you have had:

  • Recent heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • Severe increase in blood pressure (Hypertensive crisis)
  • Liver disease
  • You are elderly and your dose needs to be increased

If you’re unsure if you should buy these tablets, use our free Ask a Pharmacist service and well do our best to answer any questions you have about the medication.

We advise that you consult with either your prescriber or GP before you use or buy Amlodipine.

If you buy Amlodipine will they interact with any other medication?

Taking these tablets may lower your blood pressure even more if you are already taking other medicines to treat your high blood pressure.

What is high blood pressure?

Around a third of adults in the UK have high blood pressure, although many will not realise it. The only way to find out if your blood pressure is high is to have your blood pressure checked. Adults over 40 are advised to get their blood pressure checked every 5 years.

If your blood pressure is high you are at risk of developing certain diseases which can be a sign of more serious issues like obesity.

Amlodipine Tablets can reduce high blood pressure, however, they may not prove to be an effective treatment for all. We advise that you consult with your doctor or prescriber before you take or buy Amlodipine. This is to ensure you receive the correct treatment for you and your condition.
