- Serious illness with blistering of the skin
- Muscle weakness and pain
- A tight chest or breathlessness
- An unusual rash

Grapefruit juice contains one or more components that alter how the body uses some medicinal products, including Simvastatin tablets. Consuming grapefruit juice should be avoided.
Simvastatin tablets contain a sugar called lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.
Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking Simvastatin tablets. Inform your doctor if you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily. If you are over 65 years of age or older, if you have or have had liver disease, and if you have or have had ever muscle aches or weakness, diabetes, low blood pressure, seizures, thyroid or kidney disease.
Tell your Doctor or Pharmacist if you are taking any other medication before starting Simvastatin tablets. Some medication can make Simvastatin tablets less effective and vise versa, and could possibly increase the risk of side effects. Inform your Doctor or prescriber if you are taking any of the medications below:
- Medicines used to alter the way your immune system works, e.g. ciclosporin
- Certain antibiotics or antifungal medicines
- Other medicines to regulate lipid levels, e.g. gemfibrozil, other fibrates, colestipol
- Some calcium channel blockers used for angina or high blood pressure, e.g. amlodipine
- Other medicines known to interact with Simvastatin tablets include ezetimibe, warfarin oral, contraceptives, stiripentol, cimetidine, phenazone, colchicine, and antacids
- Medicines obtained without a prescription: St John’s Wort.
- Oral fusidic acid to treat a bacterial infection
Do not take Simvastatin tablets if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. If you are able to get pregnant it is recommended to use some form of contraception to avoid pregnancy when taking Simvastatin tablets.
The safety of taking Simvastatin tablets when breast feeding is not currently known so is not recommended. Speak to your Doctor or prescriber before using this medication if you are breast feeding, pregnant, could be pregnant or are planning to get pregnant.
Consult you Doctor before taking Simvastatin tables for any of the following:
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to simvastatin or any of the other ingredients of this
- if you currently have liver problems
- if you are pregnant or breast-feeding
- if you are taking or have taken in the last 7 days, a medicine called fusidic acid (a medicine for
bacterial infection) orally or by injection. The combination of fusidic acid and Simvastatin can
lead to serious muscle problems (rhabdomyolysis)
- you consume large amounts of alcohol
- you have kidney problems
- you have thyroid problems
- you are 65 years or older
- you are female
- you have ever had muscle problems during treatment with cholesterol-lowering medicines
called “statins” or fibrates
- you or a close family member have a hereditary muscle disorder
