Aciclovir 5% anti-viral cream treats cold sores. It stops the herpes virus from multiplying and spreading. Aciclovir cream can drastically reduce the length and severity of cold sores when applied early on in an outbreak.

What is Aciclovir cream?

You can buy Aciclovir cream online or from your local pharmacy to treat cold sores also known as oral Herpes. Aciclovir cream is an antiviral cream that stops the herpes virus from spreading and multiplying which relieves symptoms quickly.

Cold sores should start to heal within 10 days, but are contagious and may be irritating or painful while they heal.

How do you take Aciclovir cream?

When you buy Aciclovir cream it is important to wash your hands thoroughly before use.

The following instructions will help you to use the cream properly:

  • Apply a thin layer of the cream to the infected area and the skin immediately next to it, 5 times a day at intervals of about 4 hours.
  • Take care not to rub the infected skin any more than you need to.
    Wash your hands again, to avoid spreading the infection.
  • Use the cream for up to 5 days.
  • If the infection has not healed after this time, you can continue to use
    it for a further 5 days.

If your cold sore gets worse during the treatment period, or if it has not healed after 10 days of treatment, STOP using the cream and seek advice from your doctor.

Side effects Aciclovir cream?

  • Only use Cold Sore Cream to treat blisters on your lips and face.

If your immune system is weakened for any reason e.g. HIV infection, a bone marrow transplant or cancer treatment, do not treat yourself with Cold Sore Cream; you must seek advice from your doctor.

Is there any reason why I would not be able to take Aciclovir cream?

How can I ease the symptoms of a cold sore on my own?

Some suggestions for easing the symptoms of cold sores are as follows:

  • eat cool, soft foods.
  • wash your hands with soap and water before and after applying cream.
  • avoid anything that triggers your cold sores.
  • use sunblock lip balm (SPF 15 or above) if you’re outside in the sun.
  • take paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease pain and swelling (liquid paracetamol is available for children) do not give aspirin to children under 16.
  • drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

What should I avoid to prevent my cold sores getting worse?

Some suggestions of preventing cold sores worsening are as follows:

  • do not kiss anyone while you have a cold sore.
  • do not share anything that comes into contact with a cold sore. (such as cold sore creams, towels, cutlery or lipstick)
  • do not have oral sex until your cold sore completely heals as you could give your partner genital herpes.
  • do not touch your cold sore (apart from applying cream) if you do wash your hands.
  • do not rub cream into the cold sore dab it on instead.
  • do not eat acidic or salty food if it makes your cold sore feel worse.
