What is the Yasmin pill?

Yasmin is a brand of the combined contraceptive pill taken by women to prevent pregnancy.

The Yasmin pill contains two synthetic hormones: ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone. These are a man-made version of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone.

You can buy Yasmin to prevent pregnancy and is a great way for women to control their periods. When taken correctly, the combined pill is over 99% effective at protecting against pregnancy. As well as being a highly effective method of preventing pregnancy, the pill can also help to regulate your periods and make them lighter and less painful. It can also reduce PMS (premenstrual syndrome) symptoms such as mood swings, headaches and bloating.

Yasmin is taken for 21 days (three weeks) then you have a 7-day break. You will still be protected from pregnancy at this time and will have a period or withdrawal bleed this week. Often these are lighter and less painful than a regular period.

Remember that contraceptive pills like Yasmin do not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases and infections like Chlamydia or Herpes.

Yasmin can be purchased from your GP, a local pharmacy or a registered online pharmacy such as e-Surgery.

What is in my Yasmin pill?

Each Yasmin tablet contains drospirenone (3mg) and ethinylestradiol (0.03mg).

Why should I use contraception?

Contraception is a great way for women to manage their periods and prevent pregnancy. Yasmin can also stop a period in some women which can be an added benefit.

Yasmin and other contraception can also be a good way to reduce acne, control hormones and help treat endometriosis. If you would like to find out more about the different types of contraception check our handy A-Z list of contraception.

How should I take my Yasmin pill?

The Yasmin pill is taken by mouth with or without food.

Take one Yasmin tablet each day at about the same time each day to help you remember your medication. Some people prefer to take the Yasmin pill after their evening meal or at bedtime to reduce any feelings of nausea or stomach upset.

The Yasmin contraceptive pill pack contains 21 pills with active medication. After taking these 21 pills, you have a 7-day break where you do not take any tablets.

Most people experience a period during the 7-day pill-free period.

Start a new pack after the 7 day break whether or not you have your period.

If you did not get your period, consult your doctor.

What if I miss a dose of my Yasmin pill?

I missed ONE Yasmin pill by LESS than 12 hours:

  • The missed Yasmin pill should be taken as soon as you remember.
  • The rest of the Yasmin tablets in the 21-day pack should be taken as usual.
  • There is no need to use any additional contraception (such as a condom)
  • The seven-day pill-free break between your Yasmin pill packs should be taken as normal.

I missed ONE Yasmin pill by MORE than 12 hours:

  • The missed Yasmin pill should be taken as soon as you remember, even if it means taking two Yasmin pills in one day.
  • The rest of the Yasmin tablets in the 21-day pack should be taken as usual.
  • There is no need to use any additional contraception (such as a condom)
  • The seven-day pill-free break between your Yasmin pill pack should be taken as normal.

I missed TWO OR MORE Yasmin pills in one 21 day cycle, and there are MORE than seven pills left in the pack.

  • Take the most recently missed Yasmin contraceptive pill as soon as you can
  • Do not take any earlier Yasmin tablets that were missed
  • Use condoms for the following 7 days
  • Continue to finish the 21-day pack as usual.
  • Take your seven-day pill-free break and start the new Yasmin pill pack as usual.

I missed TWO OR MORE Yasmin pills in one 21 day cycle, and there are LESS than seven pills left in the pack.

  • Take the most recently missed Yasmin pill as soon as you can
  • Do not take any earlier Yasmin tablets that were missed
  • Use condoms for the following 7 days
  • Continue to finish the 21-day pack as usual.
  • DO NOT have the 7-day pill-free break. Start your new Yasmin contraceptive pill pack immediately after finishing the last tablet of this current pack.
  • You can have the 7-day break at the end of the second Yasmin pill pack.

If you experience vomiting and diarrhoea within four hours of taking the Yasmin pill, it is classed as a missed pill.

You may need emergency contraception if you miss two of your Yasmin pills in one 21 day cycle.

The effectiveness of your Yasmin contraception can be reduced if the time you take the Yasmin pill varies significantly from day to day.

How does my Yasmin pill actually work to prevent a pregnancy?

The Yasmin pill contains synthetic versions of both oestrogen and progesterone sexual hormones.

When taken regularly, it causes three things to happen:

  • The Yasmin pill prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg each month, therefore preventing ovulation. If an egg has not been released, then an egg cannot be fertilised, and a baby will not grow.
  • The Yasmin pill causes the mucus around the entrance of the womb to thicken, making it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb. If sperm cannot enter inside the womb to reach the egg, they cannot fertilise the egg.
  • The Yasmin pill also makes the lining over the womb thinner. If an egg was to be released, it would be unable to attach itself to the womb.

Please note: The Yasmin pill does not help protect against sexually transmitted infections. You should also use a condom to ensure safe sex and take an STI test every time you have a new sexual partner. You can use the NHS sexual health clinic finder to locate your closest clinic.

How long after starting my Yasmin pill does it start to work?

It depends on when you start the medication in relation to where you are in your current menstrual cycle.

  • If you begin the Yasmin pill on day 1, 2 or 3 of your period (when you start bleeding), then you will be protected right away.
  • If you start the Yasmin pill at any other day in the cycle, you will need to either A) abstain from sexual intercourse for 7 days or B) use a second form of contraception (such as a condom) for the first 7 days of using the new medication.

How effective is my Yasmin pill?

When used correctly, the Yasmin contraceptive pill is over 99% effective.

To use Yasmin correctly for contraception, you need to take a Yasmin pill every day at the same time for 21 days and have a 7-day pill-free break.

Factors that may make the Yasmin pill less effective

  • Missing medication
  • Suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Taking other medication that could interact with Yasmin pill

If you find that these issues are affecting you, please use an additional form of contraception (such as a condom) and either speak to your GP or use our Ask-A-Pharmacist service.

When can I get pregnant after taking my Yasmin pill?

It is possible to become pregnant immediately after you stop taking the Yasmin pill.

For most women, it usually takes a few months for your natural cycle to return to normal so some women may not become pregnant for several months.

If you are planning to start a family, it is highly recommended to visit a family planning clinic for advice as fertility can vary from person to person.

When will my period start again after I stop taking my Yasmin pill?

Whilst using the Yasmin pill, you will still experience a monthly bleed during your pill-free week at the end of each Yasmin pill pack.

If you stop taking Yasmin tablets, your natural menstrual cycle will return but it may take a couple of months for your body to adjust to the change in hormone levels.

Can I use my Yasmin pill for period delay?

The Yasmin pill can be used safely to delay your period.

This is what you need to do:

  • Instead of having a pill-free week, simply skip the 7 day pill-free period between your Yasmin pill packs and begin the next pack on the day after you finish your current pill pack
  • Complete the full 21 days of the new Yasmin pack.
  • This will delay your period by 3 weeks.

Are there any other benefits of using my Yasmin pill?

You have been able to buy Yasmin in the UK since 2002 and is a popular and safe option to prevent pregnancy.

Many women find the Yasmin pill has many additional benefits other than just preventing pregnancy!

The Yasmin pill can also:

  • Reduce acne breakouts
  • Improve the appearance of your hair
  • Cause weight loss by reducing water retention
  • Give you a regular period
  • Give you a lighter period
  • Make you experience less premenstrual symptoms (cramps, pains, mood swings)
  • Help to manage anaemia for individuals with heavy periods
  • Reduce the risk of cervical and ovarian cancer
  • Be used to delay your period
