Nizoral Shampoo is a medicated shampoo containing ketoconazole, an antifungal ingredient used to treat and prevent dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and other scalp conditions caused by the yeast Malassezia.
It works by targeting and reducing the yeast on the scalp, helping to relieve symptoms such as flaking, itching, and redness. Regular use can help restore the scalp’s natural balance and prevent the return of dandruff.
Nizoral is typically used twice a week for 2–4 weeks, then as needed to maintain results. It is suitable for adults and adolescents over 12 years old, and should be left on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.

You should leave Nizoral shampoo on your scalp for 3–5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. First, wet your hair and massage a small amount of shampoo into your scalp until it forms a lather. This gives the active ingredient, ketoconazole, time to work against the yeast associated with dandruff.
Use a small amount of Nizoral shampoo, sufficient to cover the affected scalp and create a lather. The amount needed depends on your hair length, thickness and the size of the affected area. For very thick or long hair, you can wash your hair with your usual shampoo first, then apply Nizoral directly to your scalp.
Follow the instructions on the packaging and avoid using more than recommended.
For dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, Nizoral 2% shampoo is generally used twice a week for 2–4 weeks. Once your symptoms improve, you can usually reduce use to once every 1–2 weeks to help prevent dandruff from returning. Nizoral is a medicated shampoo rather than an everyday hair cleanser, so use your normal shampoo between treatments if needed.
If your symptoms have not improved after four weeks, consult your pharmacist or doctor.
You should normally use Nizoral shampoo twice a week during the initial treatment period for dandruff, leaving at least three days between applications where possible. Continue this routine for 2–4 weeks, following the product leaflet.
After your dandruff has cleared, using Nizoral once every 1–2 weeks may help maintain results. Avoid using it more frequently than directed, as excessive use may irritate your scalp. Speak to a healthcare professional if your symptoms persist.
Nizoral shampoo contains ketoconazole, an antifungal ingredient that targets the yeast associated with dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. It helps reduce flaking, itching and scaling by treating the underlying fungal component of these conditions.
It can also be used for certain other skin conditions, such as pityriasis versicolor, when indicated by the product instructions or a healthcare professional. Nizoral is designed as a treatment shampoo, not as a general solution for every cause of an itchy or flaky scalp.
Nizoral shampoo usually takes around 2–4 weeks to improve dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis when used as directed. You may notice a reduction in itching and visible flakes during this period, although results vary between individuals. Continue the recommended treatment course rather than increasing the frequency to try to achieve faster results.
If your scalp has not improved after four weeks, seek advice from a pharmacist or doctor, as another condition may be causing your symptoms.
You can generally use your usual conditioner alongside Nizoral shampoo. Choose a gentle, moisturising conditioner suited to your hair type, particularly if your hair feels dry after treatment. Apply conditioner mainly to the lengths and ends of your hair, rather than directly to an irritated scalp, unless the product instructions advise otherwise.
If you need to wash your hair between Nizoral treatments, use your regular shampoo. If you experience persistent scalp irritation or worsening symptoms, speak to a pharmacist.
Nizoral 2% shampoo should not be used by anyone who is allergic to ketoconazole or any of its ingredients. The product is intended for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over. Avoid contact with your eyes and seek advice if you have a damaged or severely irritated scalp. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check the product leaflet and ask a pharmacist or doctor if you have concerns before use.
