Metronidazole Tablets contains metronidazole as an active ingredient, which belongs to the group of medicines called antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria and parasites that cause infections in your body. It can be used to treat gum and teeth infections.
Always take Metronidazole Tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are unsure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
The usual dose of metronidazole depends on the condition being treated and the patients age and weight. For dental infections, short courses of Metronidazole (3 days) are routinely prescribed to clear up infections before evaluation or treatment by a dentist. It is important to know a visit to the dentist is still required as soon as possible after metronidazole treatment.
Metronidazole Tablets, like all medicines, can cause side effects although not everybody gets them. However, you should talk to your doctor straight away if you notice the following side effects:
If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in the medication leaflet.
You should not take Metronidazole Tablets if you are allergic to metronidazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Additionally, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Metronidazole Tablets if:
If you take more Metronidazole Tablets than you should, contact your doctor or your nearest emergency department immediately. If you can, take the box, leaflet and any tablets that are left over with you. This is so the doctor knows what you have taken.
Tell your doctor before using Metronidazole Tablets if you are pregnant, might become pregnant or think you may be pregnant. This is because Metronidazole Tablets should not be taken during pregnancy unless considered necessary.
It is better not to use Metronidazole Tablets if you are breast-feeding. This is because small amounts may pass into the mother’s milk.
You should not drink any alcohol while you are taking Metronidazole Tablets and for 48 hours after finishing your course. This is because drinking alcohol while using Metronidazole Tablets might cause unpleasant side effects, such as feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting), stomach pain, hot flushes, very fast or uneven heartbeat (palpitations), and headache.
Metronidazole Tablets should be kept in its original packaging in a cool, dry space protected from light. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date shown on the pack. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
If you have any unwanted or unused tablets, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. Do not dispose of them by flushing down a toilet or sink, or by throwing them out with your normal household rubbish. This will help protect the environment.
