Thrush is a yeast infection, caused by a fungus known as Candida. There are a few symptoms that may indicate you have thrush. In women, these symptoms can include thick, white vaginal discharge, soreness or irritation during sex or when peeing and itching around the vagina. In men, these symptoms can include white discharge, irritation and redness around the head of the penis and under the foreskin.
Thrush can be caused by a variety of things such as intercourse, change in bacteria within the vagina, antibiotics, a weakened immune system or poorly controlled diabetes. Sometimes the cause of thrush might be hard to diagnose and may require an examination and frequent consultations with a medical professional.
Some women find that urinating after sex is a good way to flush out the bacteria that can cause thrush. Keeping good hygiene, which includes washing regularly and wearing fresh underwear, eating a healthy and balanced diet, consuming less sugar and using natural soaps can all help reduce the risk of developing thrush.
