Ovranette prevents your ovaries from releasing an egg. This pill also inhibits sperm from being able to find the egg and will make it difficult for an egg to implant itself into an individual’s womb lining.

The active ingredients in Ovranette are ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel.

When taking this pill, you should take one pill every day for 21 days and preferably at the same time each day. You should not crush the pill but instead swallow it whole and with water. You should take a break from this pill every so often but should seek advice from either your doctor or prescriber to find out when this should be.

When taking Ovranette, many do not experience side effects, however, that does not mean that others do not experience them. 

Common side effects include: 

• Feeling sick 
• Infections of the vagina (Thrush) 
• Abdominal pain 
• Headache 
• Changes in weight 
• Breast pain or tenderness 
• Slight bleeding or spotting between periods in the first few months 
• Lighter periods or sometimes stopping of periods 
• Mood changes 
• Dizziness 
• Acne 

Other possible side effects include: 

• Fluid retention 
• Change in sex drive 
• Changes in appetite 
• Brown patches on your face or body 
• Rise in blood pressure 
• Skin reactions. 
• Increased risk of getting a blood clot in an artery, which could cause a stroke or a heart attack. 
• Increased risk of getting a blood clot in a vein, such as a deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.

There is no evidence to suggest that any particular food group or alcohol has a direct effect on the efficacy of a patient’s Ovranette. However, you should consult your doctor or prescriber if you are concerned about your alcohol or food consumption affecting your medication.

The usefulness and efficiency of an orally taken Ovranette can be affected by the use of enzyme-inducing drugs. You should consult with your doctor or prescriber if you are concerned that your enzyme-inducing medication may affect the efficacy of your Ovranette.

Ovranette is not suitable for all women. You shouldn’t take this medication if you: 

• are over 35 and you smoke, or you stopped smoking less than a year ago 
• are very overweight 
• have ever had a DVT in your leg or lungs  
• have ever had a heart attack, angina, stroke, or mini-stroke 
• have very high blood pressure (hypertension) or vascular disease 
• have heart valve disease or an irregular heartbeat 
• have a blood disorder that increases your risk of blood clots 
• have severe diabetes with complications affecting your nerves, eyes, kidneys  
• suffer from migraines with aura 
• have breast cancer now or have had it in the last five years 
• have liver disease 
• have gallbladder disease 
• have ever had jaundice, 
• have a hearing disorder called otosclerosis 
• have or have had a rash called pemphigoid gestationis  
• if you are pregnant or when taking the pill 
• have a rare metabolic disorder called porphyria.

Ovranette contains two active ingredients, which are ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel whereas ellaOne contains ulipristal as its active ingredient.  

ellaOne stops progesterone from working normally, which then causes the delayed release of an egg. ellaOne is also referred to as the morning-after pill but is not effective if you have ovulated.
