Mefenamic Acid Capsules

It’s important that you always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.  

The recommended dose is one tablet, three times a day. However, this can vary depending on your age and your risk factors. If you are suffering from menstrual pain, Mefenamic Acid should be taken when the pain begins. They should be swallowed with a drink of water, preferably with or after food.

Although Mefenamic Acid doesn’t stop or delay periods, it is used to treat period pain. It can help with painful periods, ease cramps, stomach aches, and improve heavy periods. 

You should always take your dose as advised by your doctor. However, if you (or someone else) swallow a lot of tablets together, seek medical advice immediately.  

An overdose may result in headaches, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Bring all contents of the medication, including any leftover tablets, to the hospital or doctor so they know which tablets were consumed. 

Mefenamic Acid, like all medicines, can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. 

If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking Mefenamic Acid and seek medical attention immediately: 

• an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, face or neck, leading to severe difficulty in breathing, skin rash, or hives) 
• blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals 
• passing blood in your stools/motions 
• passing loose or black, tarry stools 

• vomit any blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds 

You should stop taking Mefenamic Acid and tell your doctor if you also suffer from indigestion or heartburn, or stomach pain or other abnormal stomach symptoms. 

If you get any side effects, including any side effects not listed in the patient information leaflet, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. 

You should not take Mefenamic Acid if you: 

• are allergic to mefenamic acid or any other ingredients in this medicine 
• have an inflammatory bowel disease 
• have, or had a history of gastrointestinal conditions 
• have severe heart, liver or kidney problems 
• are more than six months pregnant 
• have just had heart bypass surgery
