Calcium is part of our diet and is often found in dairy, nuts and spinach, it is essential for bone formation and health. Vitamin D can be acquired from sunlight as well as dairy and fish. Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults.
As well as building bones and keeping them healthy, calcium enables our blood to clot, our muscles to contract, and our heart to beat. About 99% of the calcium in our bodies is in our bones and teeth.
If you think you might be vitamin D deficient, book in to see your GP who will be able to diagnose you. You can also find vitamin D supplements in your local pharmacy. Some common symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include:
Calcium deficiency and vitamin D deficiency are very closely linked, as vitamin D is required for the absorption of calcium one often leads to the other. Some common symptoms of calcium deficiency include:
A variety of issues can cause a vitamin D deficiency. For example strict dietary requirements such as those who have a vegan diet will find it harder to get all the vitamin D they require in food without the help of supplements. Having limited exposure to sunlight or having a darker skin tone makes you more likely to develop vitamin D deficiency.
A vitamin D deficiency can lead to a calcium deficiency, further meaning that those with a vegan diet are more at risk as they also have a lower average calcium intake. High coffee or alcohol intake as well as an increased need for calcium (such as in pregnancy, breastfeeding and puberty) can also play a factor.
