Frequently Asked Questions
Levonelle One Step is an emergency contraceptive tablet. Levonelle One Step pill is the over-the-counter form of the Levonelle medication. It can prevent 84% of expected pregnancies if taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex.
Levonelle One Step pill contains the active ingredient Levonorgesterel, a hormone medication. Levonorgesterel is thought to work as a contraceptive by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg or preventing sperm from reaching a released egg. The longer you wait before taking Levonelle One Step, the less effective it will be as a contraceptive.
Levonelle One Step is not meant to be used as a regular form of contraception. If you have unprotected sex in the future after taking Levonelle One Step, the tablet will not protect you from pregnancy.
You should take Levonelle One Step pill as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Although Levonelle One Step is effective as a contraceptive for up to 72 hours, it is most effective within 12 hours of unprotected sex. Levonelle One Step is thought to prevent:
- up to 95% of pregnancies if taken within 24 hours
- up to 85% of pregnancies if taken within 48 hours
- up to 58% of pregnancies if taken within 72 hours
If you vomit within 2 hours of taking a Levonelle One Step tablet, you will need to take another one in order to be protected against pregnancy.
If you are over 70kg (11 stone), tell your pharmacist or prescriber. They may recommend that you take a double dose of Levonelle One Step to ensure its effectiveness.
If you do not take Levonelle One Step pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex, it cannot be relied on as an effective contraceptive. To prevent risk of pregnancy, you will need to use another contraceptive measure such as an emergency IUD (Intrauterine Device).
You shouldn’t take Levonelle One Step pill if you are allergic to any of the ingredients within the tablet.
