Happy New Year!
As the year comes to a close, we hope that you have been able to find some joy in the strange year of 2021.
2021 became one of our busiest years on record, due to the increase in reliance on online healthcare services to meet the demands of a population in lockdown. The unifying goal of supporting our NHS meant that many of us were turning to private services when GP practices, pharmacies, and hospitals were struggling to cope with the growing demand.
On the 6th of January 2021, England entered a third national lockdown. Our experience and knowledge gained in previous lockdowns became an invaluable asset, and we were able to continue running our online pharmacy without too much disruption. Patient feedback showed us that both our prescription service and our free ‘Ask-a-Pharmacist’ helped those isolating at home to get their prescription treatments when they needed them.
Finding time to celebrate
Despite a tumultuous year, we have still found plenty to celebrate. At the start of the year, e-Surgery CEO Dr.Thuria Wenbar was nominated for Confinitives #21toWatch shortlist in the ‘People’ category. #21toWatch ‘includes some of the most inspirational entrepreneurs, startups, and innovations from the East of England.’ Dr.Thuria was also selected as part of a business panel by BT Sports alongside Steve King (CEO of Black Swan), Will Perkins, and Harmeen Mehta to discuss ways of working in a digital world, agile working methodologies, colleague experience, and the cultural tone of businesses we are building. This allowed us to:
• Understand more about future industries and growth areas through shared insight
• Use the innovation of young companies to operate a large business
• Look at exciting innovation opportunities where BT can play a role
From here things only got more exciting, with e-Surgery winning the Tech Nation Rising Stars 3.0 Awards and Applied AI in February, beating 300+ other applicants! Rising Stars 3.0 celebrates the most exciting and accessible early-stage startups in the UK, so it goes without saying were thrilled to have won along with 10 other exciting and innovative companies from across the country. e-Surgery also won the Tech Nation Applied AI program, selected in November 2021 to further develop our AI technology.
e-Surgery was also announced as the winners of the EDP Norfolk Business Awards in the Small to Medium category in 2020, with our story being featured in early 2021. Things only got more exciting from here, when we won the Norfolk Business Awards 2021 in the Scale-up Business of the year category, and runner up in the business of the year category!
In March e-Surgery joined Microsoft in their AI For Social Impact program, to share our knowledge of AI within Healthcare with other future-focused businesses. This invaluable opportunity helped to expand the ‘behind the scenes’ tech that is the backbone of our online service. We have utilized AI to increase patient safety, and enable e-Surgery to provide more treatments than ever. This helps us reduce wait time and keep our costs competitive, which ultimately increases patient satisfaction. In addition, we were also part of the Hatch accelerator program focussing on women and diversity in entrepreneurship.
May saw e-Surgery featured in 12 Clusters of Tech Report in collaboration with London Tech Week. We truly believe that technology is the future of healthcare, and it was an honor for our hard work to be recognized by such a prestigious event.
Look at our team grow!
As our number of patients grew so did our team, from just a team of 2 in 2018 to 37 team members from around the globe. We have certainly expanded! 2021 was also the start of our internship program, partnering with the University of Liverpool, University of Leicester, Norwich University of the Arts, and Cambridge Regional College. We are incredibly grateful to all our interns who joined us, and we are so excited to continue this scheme into 2022.
To accommodate our growing team we expanded our office space and pharmacy, giving us the room for additional computers and storage. This also allowed us to social distance and keep everyone in the building safe.
